Cedar & Pine Rebated

Here’s some rebated boxes using 30mm Red Cedar and also some boxes with 35mm Pine.

Cedar is very expensive and I’ve used large stainless steel screws which are expensive too so it makes the overall cost very high so this type of box may not be for everyone.

Cedar is a lot lighter than Pine so it should have some good insulation properties.

Specs:

  • Timber: Cedar
  • Timber Thickness: 30mm
  • Design: OATH with Super – 280mm x 200mm
  • Internal Volume: 7 litres
  • Brood Supports: Cypress
  • Separator Plate: Clear Acrylic
  • Coating: Clear Coat

There’s a lot of work in this rebated join caper.  A Rebated join is where a section of one piece has been cut out and the second piece fits in to that area. The theory is that it’s creates a stronger join by creating a brace and also has a slight increase in surface area connection as opposed to the normal Butt Join that’s used where the two pieces of timber just meet square on.

Below, A few frames together, counter sunk screw holes ready to go…

Below, top and base on….

Marine grade stainless screws and clear coat which really brings out the colour of the wood nicely…

Below, the ones made from Pine. I’ve used exterior paint on these ones…
