Hive Competition 2021 – Photos

The Brisbane Branch of the ANBA held their annual hive competition for the December 2021 meeting.

Each year the Brisbane branch of the Australian Native Bee Association (ANBA) hosts a hive exhibition. It was originally intended as an exhibition but quickly became a competition with winners selected by members and judges. There were plenty of prizes this year donated by Truebluebees, Sugarbag Bees and also Doug Irvine.

There were a few categories including Commercial products, Peoples choice, Judges choice, Best decorated and Hive tool – accessory. Each entrant had three minutes to showcase their hive while the crowd of around 80 people moved around to view each one which took around one and half hours.

One pretty interesting process was described by Jason Laskus, where he applied 10,000 volts through the surface of the wood which burnt in a channel that looked like lightning. Dave Gilbert’s decorated hive was pretty spectacular as well. The peoples choice was the moulded and baked Perlite mixture round hives. We may all need to pick up our game here!

Well done to Dean Haley and Brisbane branch members for the massive effort he put in organising everything for this event. Many members are very generous with their time and put considerable effort in to make these events happen.
