Red Mailbox Hive

I thought it might be interesting to make a box in the shape of an old red mailbox…

Specs:

  • Timber: Cypress
  • Timber Thickness: 35mm
  • Design: OATH with Super – 280mm x 200mm
  • Internal Volume: 6 litres
  • Brood Supports: Cypress
  • Separator Plate: Clear Acrylic

Below, all the pieces needed for the boxes…

… putting the tops together…

…. routed out the entry….. which imitates the letter slot of a mailbox

The basic shape….

End caps fitted for the top. Drill and counter-sink screw holes

all together, screws in, fill over the screw holes and paint…

Ready to go…

Transferring some bees in to the mail box

Below – transferring bees in to the top half of the Mail Box. The entry is taped up so they are using the normal old entry in the lower section. The wait begins….

Splits 22/09/2018

Nearly one year later I’m splitting the Red Mail Box. The brood split cleanly in the perfect spot.

I’ve placed the new box right beside the old one, only because it’s a good position with a patio roof to keep the rain off.
